About us

Jo
The Railway Farm Shop sells naturally and locally grown vegetables, fruit and flowers as well as other organic produce. Located in Benhall Green, Suffolk, the farm shop and 2-acre smallholding is owned and run by Tom and Pat Smith, while Jo manages the shop day-to-day. It started life in 2005 as a roadside stall selling vegetables grown in Tom’s garden together with produce from other local growers. As demand grew, Tom acquired a field in the village (next to the Railway bridge in Benhall Green, hence the name) where he built the current shop and began growing and selling a greater variety of produce. In July 2006, Tom acquired the use of another acre of land in the village. In 2007 we will be selling Asparagus grown in the village. The shop continues to go from strength to strength, and we look forward to welcoming you here soon!

Our philosophy is to provide naturally and locally grown food at an affordable price, with the majority of our produce being organic. We grow many of the things sold in our shop and all the other produce we sell is provided by local and small-scale manufacturers. We are delighted to sell fruit, eggs and vegetables produced by people in the village. We supply a number of hotels and restaurants including the Crown and Castle Hotel & Restaurant, Orford. We are members of the Suffolk Smallholders Society.

We are delighted to sell organic vegetables from Lady Caroline Cranbrook’s walled kitchen garden at Great Glemham. Lady Cranbrook is a champion of naturally grown food and local producers, and back in 1998 was instrumental in stopping a large Tesco supermarket being built in Saxmundham, a town near to our shop. Read here about the background to this story. Read more about why we think naturally grown food is best. Or read our blog in Tom's farm diary to keep up with what we're up to on the farm.

And if you're wondering about the neat little illustrations on our website, then we're delighted to tell you that they are drawn for us by top animal illustrator Jason Chapman, who is the official artist for the Battersea Dogs & Cats Home and is currently illustrating four children's books for publication in 2007.
